Source Dataset

The UKCES Employer Skills Survey (ESS) collects detailed information on up to six occupations per establishment. Occupations are classified using SOC 2010. Unfortunately, the survey does not collect data on the numbers employed in each occupation. Therefore the indicators which it is possible to generate are limited to the number of vacancies, hard-to-fill and skill shortage vacancies and the percentage of total vacancies which are hard-to-fill and skill shortage.

The survey is intended to produce estimates of the total number of vacancies, hard-to-fill vacancies and skill shortage vacancies in the UK from a sample of establishments. This is achieved by multiplying the results of a survey by a weight derived from the ratio of the number of establishments in the survey to the total number of establishments in the UK. The data set includes the weighted and unweighted number of establishments upon which each value in the data set is based. There is a further weight intended to make the employment estimates from the survey match total employment (these are not presented in these data sets). Vacancy counts from the survey have been multiplied by the survey’s employment weight in order to provide an estimate of the total number of vacancies of this type in the UK or region. The most detailed geographical breakdown available is to regions in England and the other nations of the UK: Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Time period: 2011,2013,2015 and 2017. The UKCES Employer Skills Survey is conducted every two years. The 2011 ESS was the first ESS to cover the entire UK.

Data values are for combinations of industry and occupation within each region and nation. Occupational information is presented for SOC sub-major groups. This is because sample sizes for the full 4 digit occupational classification are too small for the estimates to be regarded as reliable at the geographical scale of English regions and the other nations of the UK. Occupational codes below 1 should be treated as missing values.

Output

The dataset is to be queried on the occupation or industry code, and returns a set of the vacancies for this occupation, and how many of those vacancies are hard to fill or have skills shortages.

Closing Notes

The Employer Skills Survey is a sample survey. Estimates based on an unweighted cells count of less than 50 should not be reported. The variable validcell is set to 1 for values which can be reported and to 0 for those which should not be reported. The missing value code is -1.
